19 Jun The French Channel You Couldn’t Change
On a lighter note, I spoke so much English. I got scolded everyday. My friends and I laughed about this all the time. If there was an award for speaking the most English out of any student in the program, I would have gotten it. IN MY DEFENSE, only cause I had to say it in English just to confirm I had translated it correctly! No matter how hard I tried to learn the language, it wouldn’t stick all the time. It was a constant struggle to learn the grammar; which in turn stunted my speaking. For those who know me, they know I can be the most impatient person. So you can imagine how difficult it was for me to truly accept that only time and lots of practice will improve my ability to speak fluent French. Sigh.
Was it worth it? Yes.
Would I do it again? Yes.
Why? Cause even though it was tough. I made it.
I got perfect on my “Quebec Culture” presentation
I taught a 5 min group fitness class for “Sports and Nutrition”
I presented a tourism presentation of the city for my “Discovering Riviere-du-Loup” class
I did my oral presentation for “French 100″
ALL IN FRENCH!
Even though it was tough, I know I progressed because literally on the last day I could articulate the language fluently with the words I knew. I could speak! I felt confident. I was so happy. I can’t fully explain the transformation you go through as a person when you travel across the country to live and study another language. When you see the same people everyday for 5 weeks. You endure all the struggles and triumphs together. The friendships you make in these situations will be forever. You meet people from all walks of life from doctors, entrepreneurs, masters students, lawyers etc… I had a fantastic support system. I would not have survived without my friends. I can’t stress it enough that its moments like this; that makes me want to be a better person. When I was so upset one night? My two closest friends walked forever to come see me to make sure I was okay. I didn’t even ask. I also want to mention there’s no transit system in little towns in Quebec. Unfortunately…
When I didn’t have enough “bleudollars” to purchase a t-shirt at the school auction? They gave some their dollars to me so I can get it. While being away, you also spend so much time reflecting on your life. I gained more clarity to what I wanted in life and what I want to do moving forward. I made time to do things I didn’t do back home like biking, hiking, meditating, reading books, listening and laughing more. I was fortunate enough on this trip to discover my true passion and gain more confidence in being comfortable with me. My vision for my future couldn’t be clearer. How to get there is a different story. I’ll never forget this experience.
Tony, thank you for taking me as your date!
