A Decade of Discovery: Embracing Adventures, Growth and Healing in My 20s

As I reflect on my 20s, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the privileges, incredible opportunities and experiences. The 15-year-old version of Arianne would have never imagined the life she would have in her 20s. Once I discovered my inner strength to succeed and not be a victim to the situations I was in, I made a commitment to myself that I would give myself my 20s to discover and do as much as I could. These years were not just a passage of time but rather a canvas where I painted a colourful mosaic of experiences – from globetrotting, taking risks to pursuing education and embracing the unknown. It was also a profound journey of self-discovery, growth and healing. I watched myself evolve time over time. I’ll share how I harnessed the boundless energy of my twenties to travel the world, take risks, pursue education, confront emotional history and trauma, and embrace the joy of new experiences.

Wandering Through the World: The Joys of Travel
One of the most exhilarating aspects of my 20s was acquiring enough resources to explore the world. I learned how to ask for help, got around people who did what I wanted to do for myself, explored available resources like student loans/bursaries, and worked 2 jobs to gain the income I needed. Then I armed myself with a backpack and a sense of wanderlust, I embarked on journeys that took me to breathtaking landscapes, bustling cities, and serene beaches. Whether it heading on a 7-day all-inclusive in Mexico, a 10-day cruise in the Caribbean, travelling solo in the rich cultures of Southeast Asia, studying abroad in Guangdong, China, volunteering abroad in Myanmar, or taking a train across Canada, each adventure left a permanent mark on my soul. Travelling during this period allowed me to broaden my perspective, understand different cultures, and forge connections with people from diverse backgrounds. The exposure to diverse cultures fostered a different level of empathy and understanding I didn’t have before. Travel became more than a leisure activity; it transformed into a classroom where the world became my teacher. It kept my mind and heart open, which is how I ended up meeting my now-husband while studying in China. Whether navigating bustling markets, scaling mountain peaks, or lounging on tropical beaches, each destination became a chapter in my life’s travelogue. It continues to be a pillar of what lights me up as I move through my 30s.

Taking Calculated Risks: Building Resilience
In the realm of personal and professional development, my 20s were marked by a willingness to take calculated risks. I started a brick-and-mortar business that lasted for 6 years before transitioning into something new, changed careers by moving into the corporate world and dared to pursue unconventional paths by starting a mobile business with my husband. I never walked the path society laid out or what my mom wanted me to be. These risks were not without challenges to my mental and financial health, but the resilience gained through each experience fortified my spirit. Embracing uncertainty became a mantra, teaching me that magic happens at the edge of my comfort zone. The ability to embrace uncertainty and navigate challenges became a cornerstone of my personal growth. In the end, it showed me what was the most important to me and what to prioritize now.

Academic Adventures: Fueling Intellectual Curiosity
While exploring the external world was thrilling, the inward journey was equally significant. Despite getting a lot of pressure from my mom to start University right after high school, I took my time with enrolling in post-secondary as I wanted to be sure it was what I wanted to study and pay for. I pursued education not just as a means to an end but as a process of self-discovery. I began my post-secondary chapter in 2010 and spent 8 years completing my Bachelor of Business Administration. Academic pursuits became a sanctuary where I could delve into subjects that ignited my curiosity. Even beyond graduation, I am finding myself taking new courses and continuing my education. The balance between formal education and global exploration provided a holistic understanding of the world and my place within it.

Healing the Heart: Confronting Emotional History and Trauma
The twenties were also a crucible for my emotional growth. I confronted and navigated the depths of my emotional history and trauma, embarking on a journey of healing (well not by choice, my body gave out). This process required vulnerability, self-reflection, and seeking professional help. After my bodybuilding competition in 2014, I saw psychologists and counsellors and have never looked back. I repaired my relationship with my body, food, and mother wound. I spent time with myself by travelling alone and dedicating time each week to be with myself. As I mended the wounds of the past, I found a newfound strength that fueled my other pursuits which included changing my career paths and opening my own personal training service with a focus on mental health.

Diversifying Experiences: Trying New Things
The 20s were also a time to cast aside inhibitions and try new things. It was so easy to fall back into my comfort zone of sticking to what I know however I didn’t let that comfort get in the way of trying new things. From learning how to dance Argentino Tango, skydiving, bungee jumping, opening myself up to new friendships, or embarking on a long-distance romantic relationship for 3+ years, I embraced a mindset of continuous learning and experimentation. These varied experiences not only added layers to my identity but also fostered a sense of self-discovery and accomplishment.

All in all, I carry with me a treasure trove of memories, lessons, and a deep sense of fulfillment. The deliberate choice to travel, take risks, pursue education, and try new things during this vibrant decade has shaped the person I am today. It’s a testament to the belief that life’s most enriching experiences often lie at the intersection of curiosity and courage. I continue to carry this with me as I pursue new goals, adventures and experiences. Whether you do one, all or none, it’s up to you. If there’s anything to take away from this post, do as much as you can to help you discover what brings you joy. Then keep doing that.
